Cultivating Connection Between Land, Food, and People
Taro is a crop that has been cultivated for generations. Traditional taro fields (lo'i) feature an agricultural system that preserves soil health, manages water resources, and supports biodiversity, offering valuable lessons for modern sustainable farming.
Each step of taro cultivation reflects Hawaiian ecological wisdom and the profound understanding of our reciprocal relationship with nature: That when we nurture the land, it nurtures us in return.
Rising from the Wetlands of Kaua'i’s Hanalei Valley
Nestled in the northern edge of the Hawaiian islands is Kaua'i, one of the wettest places on earth. In Kaua'i is Hanalei Valley, where rich volcanic soil and fresh mountain streams nourish the Lehua variety of taro, a well-loved variety used in traditional Hawaiian dishes like poi. Cultivated through replanting huli in irrigated terraces, the taro matures over 9–12 months, and is nourished by a steady flow of fresh water that keeps it healthy and vibrant.

Connecting Land and Community With Kupu
10% of proceeds from the Taro bar will be donated directly to Kupu, Hawai'i’s leading youth conservation nonprofit. Grounded in Hawaiian values and community, Kupu empowers youth through education, scholarships, and internships that build character, encourage service-learning, and provide entry points for careers in conservation.

What are the benefits of Taro?
This starchy root vegetable has been a staple ingredient in Hawaiian diets for generations, providing a good source of complex carbohydrates for sustained energy and fiber that can help you feel full for longer. It is also a good source of vitamins and minerals, including Vitamin E, vitamin B6, potassium, magnesium and manganese.
What does Taro taste like?
The “lehua” variety of Taro offers a subtle sweetness and deliciously creamy texture. It tastes similar to sweet potato, but with delicate hints of vanilla.
Is every single ingredient in this Taro Bar sourced directly from Hawaii?
The Taro Bar features three key Hawaiian ingredients: taro from Kaua’i’s Hanalei Valley, macadamia nuts from Hamakua Macadamia Nut Company on Hawaiʻi Island, and Ponova® Oil from climate-resilient Pongamia trees grown by Terviva on Oahu’s North Shore. Other ingredients are sourced globally to meet ALOHA’s quality standards, as not all ingredients can be grown in Hawai'i due to factors like climate, soil, land use, and processing and shipping constraints.
Why doesn’t this bar have the USDA Organic certification like all the other ALOHA bars?
Talking directly with farmers, we've learned that USDA Organic certification can take 3-5 years and require costly operational changes— often out of reach for small farms. However, many of these farms already follow organic practices, like avoiding harsh chemicals and pesticides. While the Taro Bar doesn’t carry the official USDA Organic mark, most of its ingredients are organic and each undergo ALOHA’s rigorous quality-control process.
Where can I find out more about ALOHA’s other efforts to reduce their impact?
