  • Ingredient: Ponova Oil™

Source: Terviva grows climate-resilient pongamia trees on 80 acres of former sugarcane and pineapple land near Hale'iwa on O'ahu’s North Shore. Pongamia is a regenerative tree crop which helps to revitalize the land by improving soil health and water quality. It naturally resists pests and requires minimal water. Trees are irrigated by natural rainwater and the beans are then hand harvested and dried in the sun with the orchard running mainly off of solar-powered tools. Ponova™ oil is expeller pressed and lightly refined, an eco-friendly substitute for traditional vegetable oils.

We’re Making the Commitment

We’re thrilled to announce that we’ve begun our journey to become Climate Neutral. If you’re not sure what that means, it refers to the emissions and mitigation of ALL greenhouse gasses — not just carbon. And though it’s not an easy task, it’s an important one to us.

At ALOHA we believe that even the smallest businesses have the power to make a big impact, especially when we partner with like-minded companies to do so. That’s why we’re so proud of our Kona Bar partners and the work they do to push the industry forward, to a more sustainable future. It’s also why we’ll never stop challenging our own practices to ensure we’re always doing our very best to support our communities and planet.

FAQs

What makes Kona Coffee so special?

+ -

In truth, we think all coffee is special. That’s why the Kona Bar isn’t our first bar featuring it (check out our Chocolate Espresso bar here). That said, Kona coffee is grown in a very special region of Hawai’i that is like no other (trust us, we’ve been there). Nestled within the Kona Belt, located along the western slopes of the Mauna Loa and Hualalai volcanoes on the island of Hawai’i, we’ve sourced this coffee with great care. The combination of climate, altitude and soil conditions make it one of the best places in the world to grow coffee. Combined with the meticulous process of hand-picking and processing the beans on-site at a multi-generational family farm, we are confident this is one of the richest, most complex flavors of coffee that your taste buds will ever encounter.

How would you describe the taste of Kona Coffee?

+ -

Take it from our partners at Greenwell Farms who describe Kona to “have a floral aroma, a bright natural sweetness, and have little or no bitterness”.

How much caffeine is in the Kona Bar?

+ -

The Kona Bar has less than 10 milligrams of caffeine, allowing this special bar to be enjoyed at all times of the day. In their own words, our partners at Greenwell Farms describe Kona Coffee as having “a floral aroma, a bright natural sweetness, and little or no bitterness.” We hope you love this bar as much as we do!

Why doesn't this bar have the USDA Organic certification like all the other ALOHA bars?

+ -

That’s a great question and one we asked as well. Learning directly from the farmers and growers themselves, we know that obtaining a USDA Organic certification can be a long and costly process (you can read more about it here).

For some farms it can take up to 3-5 years and require a serious overhaul of operations, which may not add immediate value. This is one reason why many small farms don’t have the time or resources to achieve the certification. That said, this doesn’t mean these farms don’t already meet many of the standards that we think of when we choose organic, such as the avoidance of any harsh chemicals or pesticides. And while this Kona bar lacks the USDA Organic mark, most of the ingredients are, in fact, organic, and each are subjected to the rigorous Aloha quality-control process we use for all our products.

Why isn’t this bar Certified Vegan like all other ALOHA bars?

+ -

Ponova™ oil is a new regenerative crop that has proven to sequester carbon, improves soil health and water quality and revitalized agricultural land but has not yet obtained vegan action certification.

Is every single ingredient in this Kona Bar sourced directly from Hawai’i?

+ -

No. The Kona Bar includes three key ingredients from Hawai’i; 100% Kona Coffee from Greenwell Farms, Macadamia Nuts from Hamakua Macadamia Nut Company and Ponova(TM) oil from Terviva Farms. All other ingredients were sourced from various partner farms around the world, all guaranteed to meet ALOHA’s quality standards. This is mainly because not all ingredients are farmed and produced in Hawai’i, due to myriad factors including climate, soil density, land usage, and cost constraints related to shipment and distribution.

Where can I find out more about ALOHA’s other efforts to reduce their impact?

+ -
