Behind the Bar
Ocean water goes through nine levels of filtration before being dried by the sun to produce the salt for the Pa'akai Bar, a naturally occurring process that can take up to five weeks. Hawaiian sea salt is considered to be some of the purest salt in the world, containing more trace minerals and lower sodium concentrate. In short, it’s less “salty” and more flavorful.
From the slopes of Kohala in Hawai'i, where Hamakua Macadamia Nut company powers the largest local macadamia nut harvest with 100% biomass and solar energy, this bar features ingredients from farms who are pushing the needle on regenerative farming.
10% of proceeds from this bar go to ALOHA's long-time partners at Kupu, helping to empower Hawai'i and Pacific region’s youth through dozens of free and paid environmental conservation programs. From restoring historic wetlands in the field, to solving sustainability challenges in the classroom, Kupu is on a mission to empower youth to serve their communities through character-building, service-learning and environmental stewardship.

The Pa'akai Bar’s Ponova® oil is changing the way we make food. Agricultural innovation company, Terviva, partners with farmers to grow and harvest climate-resilient pongamia trees which help to revitalize the land by improving soil health and water quality. Its beans are expeller-pressed to produce planet-friendly Ponova® oil, which Fast Company named one of 2023’s “World-Changing Ideas.”

What are the benefits of Hawaiian Sea Salt?
Hawaiian White Silver Sea Salt is some of the purest salt in the world. It contains more trace minerals and has a lower sodium concentrate. It’s less “salty” than your standard sea salt and more flavorful!
Why doesn’t this bar have the USDA Organic certification like all the other ALOHA bars?
That’s a great question and one we asked as well. Learning directly from the farmers and growers themselves, we know that obtaining a USDA Organic certification can be a long and costly process (you can read more about it here).
For some farms it can take up to 3-5 years and require a serious overhaul of operations, which may not add immediate value. This is one reason why many small farms don’t have the time or resources to achieve the certification. That said, this doesn’t mean these farms don’t already meet many of the standards that we think of when we choose organic, such as the avoidance of any harsh chemicals or pesticides. And while this Pa'akai Bar lacks the USDA Organic mark, most of the ingredients are, in fact, organic, and each are subjected to the rigorous ALOHA quality-control process we use for all our products.
Why isn’t this bar Certified Vegan like all other ALOHA bars?
Ponova® oil is a new regenerative crop that has proven to sequester carbon, improves soil health and water quality and revitalized agricultural land but has not yet obtained vegan action certification.
Is every single ingredient in this Pa'akai Bar sourced directly from Hawai'i?
No. The Pa'akai Bar includes two key ingredients from Hawai'i; 100% Hawaiian Sea Salt, and Macadamia Nuts from Hamakua Macadamia Nut Company. All other ingredients were sourced from various partner farms around the world, all guaranteed to meet ALOHA’s quality standards. This is mainly because not all ingredients are farmed and produced in Hawai'i, due to myriad factors including climate, soil density, land usage, and cost constraints related to shipment and distribution.
Where can I find out more about ALOHA’s other efforts to reduce their impact?
First, we’re very flattered that you want to learn more about the efforts ALOHA makes to run a sustainable business. We think it’s pretty cool too.
You can visit our impact page to learn more about everything from our give-back programs to how we became the first plant-based bar to achieve a climate neutral certification
