Last week in NYC, glammed-out yogis gathered at The Bent On Learning Gala. They honored the philanthropic efforts of Dr. Frank Lipman and YogaWorks New York City Studios’ Teacher Manager, Lisa Greenblatt Binderow. The ALOHA Way had the opportunity to rap with Lisa G about this amazing urban initiative.
ALOHA: Can you tell us what Bent On Learning does?
LISA G: Bent On Learning is a nonprofit organization committed to teaching yoga to children in New York City public schools. It is a way to directly promote health conscious, learning-ready students.
ALOHA: What do you love about Bent On Learning?
LISA G: I love the Bent On Learning Mission, the hard working board members who welcome anyone who wants to help with open arms, the dedicated Bent On Learning teachers, and of course the kids!
ALOHA: What is your hope for students affected by Bent On Learning?
LISA G: We are hoping to equip these kids with the tools cultivated in a Yoga practice. We want to help prepare them for a life that can be lived mindfully, with confidence that they have control over their thoughts, their bodies, and their choices.
ALOHA: What is one thing anyone can do today to aid in this mission?
LISA G: Join the Yoga Professionals Committee! In 2013, a group of 100 avid yogis came together to volunteer their time and resources to support Bent On Learning (and yoga for public school children). Each member sponsors a child to receive weekly yoga classes for one year. In addition to raising funds, supporters can spread the word about the value of Bent On Learning. They can offer their time and expertise to support the organization. Every new member brings yoga to at least one more child each year!
