A Guide to Enjoying a Holiday Season Your Body Will Thank You For

During the holidays it’s natural to want to indulge. There are delicious drinks and treats every which way you look! The holiday season can induce enough anxiety without stressing out about the abundance of food and drink choices and how they will affect your body. Today I’m going to share my top tips on how to savor the flavors of the holiday season while feeling your best.

1. Prep your body

Prepare your body for indulgence. Make sure to hydrate all day long so your body gets a head start. I recommend hot water if it’s available, as it’s easier for your body to absorb. Make sure to have some Apple Cider Vinegar before you leave. You want the one with ‘the mother’ (that’s the good stuff that looks gross at the bottom of the bottle) and feel free to drink it however your taste buds will allow. I like it in a shot glass, but mixing it in with a cup of water does the trick just as well.

2. Prep your mind

First, ask yourself if you actually want to be drinking or indulging in heavy foods. It’s important to be mindful, as sometimes we drink out of social obligation.

Then, go in with a plan. Take a look at your week and what social engagements you have and make a decision in advance on how much you want to partake. Even if you don’t stick with it you’ll be able to look back at where you decided to veer off your plan. Don’t skip this step, when we don’t have a plan there’s no data to analyze.

3. Indulge wisely

If you’ve chosen to enjoy some adult beverages, nutrition expert and member of the Ziva Meditation family, Kelsey Mathes always recommends tequila and soda or vodka and soda as they are the “healthiest” drinks due to their lower sugar content. But if you’re someone who drinks 1 beer or 1 glass of wine when you drink, but will tend to slam 10 vodka sodas, stick with what you’re more likely to drink less of.

When it comes to food I would simply take a look at what’s being offered and feel into your desires. Does something look especially delicious to you? Is everything looking mediocre and like a stomach ache waiting to happen? Follow your instincts. When in doubt, start with vegetables. You never regret eating more vegetables.

4. Damage Control

If you did overindulge a bit I recommend being gentle with yourself. Even the best laid plans can go awry. First, drop into a meditation the morning after. Your practice is not going to judge you for being hungover, and you’ll feel better on the other side.

Then go ahead and enjoy some raw fats. Raw coconut oil, avocados, and even some raw cheese on top of your eggs if you can get your hands on it. It will line your stomach and help with the nausea.

Finally, you can do a few minutes of a body scan. This is a mindfulness exercise where you actually bring your awareness to any pain or nausea you’re having. Pain is our body’s way of communicating with us. When we practice mindfulness we close the feedback loop between the brain and body giving your body the opportunity to talk a bit softer. Do this a few times and the pain should dissipate and then you can move on to the new now and enjoy the rest of your holiday season.
