5 Ways Meditation Can Instantly Supercharge your Workout

Your time is the most valuable thing you have, and when it comes to fitting in a workout you want to get the most out of your time investment. What if I told you that there is a tool you can use in tandem with exercise that can supercharge your workout? Imagine finishing every session feeling like you not only gave your body exactly what it needed, but having your mind firing on all cylinders. That tool exists. It’s called meditation.

I want to share with you the top five things you need to know about meditation and exercise:

1. Exercise and Meditation are Not The Same Thing

People often say to me, “exercise is my meditation.” What they are really trying to communicate is that exercise relaxes them or relieves stress, which is great, but exercise is giving your body very different benefits than meditation. When you exercise you excite the nervous system and you speed up your metabolic rate, which is the rate at which the body consumes oxygen. Exercise is good enough to handle the stress you’re feeling right now. So if your boss yells at you during the day, you can go to the gym that evening and run off the cortisol or box away the adrenaline that your body produced earlier that day. If you want to get rid of the stress accumulated in your cells from the past, you need to give your body deep healing rest. This is where meditation comes in.

In the style we teach at Ziva Meditation you de-excite the nervous system which allows you to access a verifiable fourth state of consciousness which is different than waking, sleeping, or dreaming and gives your body rest that is 5x deeper than sleep. You also rid your body of cortisol and adrenaline while flooding it with dopamine and serotonin (aka bliss chemicals). Meditation also boasts an impressive list of immediate gains, but these benefits are very different from exercise.

When you meditate right before your workout you give yourself a boost of energy that allows you to get the most out of your workout. The one exception to this rule is yoga. Yoga was designed to prepare the body for meditation, so we recommend doing yoga before you meditate.

Research shows that mindful meditation can reduce pain receptivity by up to 44%! That is double the strength of morphine. This allows the sensation to decrease instead of intensify. Meditation has also been used by top athletes to speed up recovery time during intense training.

Truth be told no workout plan knows exactly what your body needs, only you know if you need a punching bag or a yoga mat.
